Managing the Use of Diagnostic Imaging

Diagnostic imaging is one of the fastest growing and most expensive elements of health care. The Everett Clinic carefully manages utilization by using a multi-disciplinary team to set criteria based on scientific evidence to guide the use of imaging.

Several years ago, a team of Everett Clinic physicians met with our Radiology Department to develop the appropriate indications for advanced imaging procedures such as MRI and CT scans.

As a result, it is no longer possible for our physicians to order those procedures unless their patients meet the indications. Evaluating all aspect of the diagnostic imaging ensures the right test is done at the right time, and that patients are not exposed to unnecessary radiation. The result is a 39 percent decrease in advanced imaging utilization over two years.
